BUILD A SAFER LIGHTING PLAN

Do not rely on one flashlight.

Light shared spaces

Use a dimmable lantern in kitchens, bathrooms, and gathering areas. Lower settings preserve battery life and reduce glare.

Keep both hands free

Give each person a headlamp for stairs, repairs, cooking, first aid, and evacuation. Include a red or low mode when practical.

Standardize power

Limit the number of battery and cable types in the kit. Keep spare batteries separate from devices and recharge stored lights regularly.

AT-A-GLANCE COMPARISON

Choose by task—not just lumens.

Use light—not flame

Flashlights and lanterns are safer around children, pets, fuel, damaged buildings, and possible gas leaks. Keep candles out of the primary emergency-lighting plan, and never stare directly into high-output LEDs.

THE POWER MAY FAIL. YOUR LIGHTING PLAN SHOULD NOT.

Put a light within reach.

Keep one beside every bed, one in the kitchen, and one in each vehicle—then test them before storm season.
